New Zealand's trio of female sprinters all safely navigated their way through this afternoon's qualifying stages at the national Junior Track Cycling World Champs Invercargill.

Auckland's Paige Paterson posted the fastest time in the 17 strong field.

The other two New Zealand riders Victoria Steel from Canterbury and Kate Dunlevey from Southland missed out on the top seven automatic qualifiers but came through the repechage races to move into the quarterfinals.

The men's omnium got underway with 16 riders taking part in the 250m flying lap, the first of six events over the next two days.

Great Britain's Jon Dibben won the opening event with New Zealand's Taylah Harrison fourth.
