The Christchurch swimmer Sophie Pascoe has won New Zealand's first gold medal at the Paralympic Games setting a new world record in the process of defending her 200 metre individual medley title.

Pascoe's world record time of two minutes 25.65 seconds was three seconds faster than the world record she set in the heats earlier the same day of two minutes 28.73 seconds.

Four years ago hardly anyone had heard of Pascoe, but that changed after the then 15-year-old swam her way to three golds and one silver in Beijing.
