Roddick about to retire

12:48 pm on 1 September 2012

Andy Roddick, the last American male to win a grand slam tennis tournament, has announced that he will retire after the US Open.

The former world number one, who made the announcement during a news conference on his 30th birthday, reached the finals of Wimbledon three times, losing to current world number one Roger Federer on each occasion.

Currently ranked 22nd in the world, Roddick has won 32 titles with career earnings of $30 million.

The 2003 US Open champion says the decision had been on the horizon for some time.

Roddick never managed to add to his Grand Slam collection in an era increasingly dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic - who have won 29 of the last 30 majors.
