The New Zealand team has won its 13th Paralympic medal at the London Games, topping their 12-medal haul from Beijing four years ago.

The Southland tandem cyclists Philippa Gray and Laura Thompson claimed the silver medal in the individual B time trial at the Brands Hatch raceway.

The pair switched from the velodrome to take the chequered flag in the 24-kilometre race in a time of 35 minutes and 07.68 seconds, just half a second behind the gold medal-winning crew from the Netherlands.

Gray and Thompson now own the full set of Paralympic medals, with the gold and the bronze they won at the velodrome in the individual B pursuit and B time trial earlier in the Games.

The hand cyclist Sue Reid from Ngatea on the Hauraki Plains finished just outside the medals in fourth in the H3 time trial.

Northland's Fiona Southorn was fifth on the 16-kilometre course in the C 4-5 road race.

Taranaki's Nathan Smith finished 11th out of the 14 riders who were contesting the medals in his C3 individual time trial.
