The Wallabies utility Berrick Barnes will play his first Test at fullback after Kurtley Beale was dropped from Australia's starting XV for the second time in the Rugby Championship.

Pat McCabe returns from injury to start at second five, with Barnes shifting to fullback at the expense of the out-of-form Beale for the match against Argentina on the Gold Coast.

Beale is on the bench for the second time in three Tests after being dumped following his shocker in the opening game of the tournament against New Zealand in Sydney.

Veteran lock Nathan Sharpe will captain Australia in his 109th Test, taking the reins from halfback Will Genia who is out for six months after injuring his knee in the weekend's 26-19 win over South Africa.

Nick Phipps replacing Genia at number nine, while the Waratahs lock Kane Douglas will make his Test debut in place of the injured Sitaleki Timani.
