The former Australian international Simone McKinnis has been promoted to the top job as coach of the Melbourne Vixens for the trans-Tasman netball competition.

McKinnis replaces Julie Hoornweg, who stepped down after five seasons and steering the team to the 2012 grand final.

McKinnis, who has been appointed on a two-year deal, worked as a defence specialist under Hoornweg.

A former wing defence, McKinnis represented Australia in 63 Tests between 1986 and 1998 winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1998 and world championships in 1991 and 1995.
