Champions held to a draw in opening match in Europe

Italian football champions Juventus came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with holders Chelsea in their opening Champions League Group E match at Stamford Bridge.

Young Brazilian forward Oscar put the home side ahead with two first-half goals in two minutes, while Juventus grabbed a share of the points with 10 minutes to play.

Bayern Munich cast aside the bitter memories of their Champions League final defeat to Chelsea in May with a 2-1 Group F victory over Spanish side Valencia.

Michael Carrick scored his first Champions League goal in three years to give Manchester United a 1-0 victory over Galatasaray of Turkey at Old Trafford.

But United looked about as convincing as they did in their exit from the competition last season, and in truth could have lost if what looked like two straightforward penalties were awarded. Galatasaray also hit the woodwork twice while United's Portugese winger Nani failed to convert a penalty.

Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona came from behind to beat Spartak Moscow 3-2 at the Nou Camp.
