Favourite Philippe Gilbert has won the men's road race at the Cycling World Championships in the Netherlands.

The win salvaged a disappointing season for the Belgian who had struggled all year after finishing as world number one in 2011.

Gilbert surged ahead on the final climb and never looked back, holding off his rivals on the closing, flat part.

Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen finished second ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Valverde at the end of a 267-kilometre ride.

Defending champion Mark Cavendish, along with the three New Zealanders Julian Dean, Hayden Roulston and Jesse Sergent, were among the 85 riders who didn't finish.
