Gunners put six past Coventry

12:36 pm on 27 September 2012

Arsenal headlined a predictable day in the English League Cup as the Gunners thrashed third division visitors Coventry City 6-1 in London, while Manchester United beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Old Trafford.

A flood of second-half goals showed the difference between Premier League Arsenal and League One Coventry, with the hosts only ahead 1-0 at half-time at the Emirates.

England striker Wayne Rooney played his first match in a month for Manchester United after returning from a nasty leg gash.

In other third round matches Liverpool finished off West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at the Hawthorns with a late winner, League One side Carlisle United were thrashed 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur, Norwich City edged Doncaster Rovers 1-0 in another top flight versus division three clash and Queens Park Rangers lost 3-2 to fellow Premier League strugglers Reading in London.

The draw for the next round sees Liverpool host Swansea, Manchester United travel to Chelsea while Arsenal play at Reading.

Leeds United, who upset Everton on Wednesday, are at home to Southampton and Manchester City's conquerors Aston Villa travel to Swindon Town.

Sunderland host Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic welcome lowly Bradford.
