A bonus-point win lifted Wellington to the top of rugby's ITM Cup Premiership standings after beating cellar-dwellers North Harbour in an exciting 34-28 win.

The Lions openside Ardie Savea starred for the home side scoring a try in the 14th minute, coming close to another in the first half and was always involved in the play.

Wellington's other tries were scored by Ross Filipo, Lima Sopoaga, Kaipati Gaualofa and Shaun Treeby.

Sopoaga also converted four of the tries and kicked a penalty goal in his 16-point haul.

In Saturday's other ITM Cup match, Hawkes Bay held on to beat Otago 21-15 in an all-penalty goals affair.
