Australia still alive in World Cup qualifying

2:51 pm on 17 October 2012

Tim Cahill and Archie Thompson have put Australia's World Cup qualifying campaign back on track by scoring late in a well-deserved 2-1 win over Iraq in Doha.

With Oman doing Australia a favour by beating Jordan 2-1, the Socceroos now sit in second place in their group on goal difference with four matches to play next year, including three home fixtures.

The top two sides from each group qualify for Brazil with the third-placed team forced to run the gauntlet against another Asian team and the fifth-placed South American team.

Australia will be without skipper Lucas Neill and Carl Valeri for their next qualifier against Oman on March 26th in Sydney after both picked up yellow cards on the night.
