The Southland rugby player Hoani Macdonald has been released from hospital in Auckland, a week after collapsing on the field due to a cardiac arrest.

The 34-year-old former Junior and Maori All Black collapsed during Southland's provincial Championship semi-final loss to Counties-Manukau eight days ago.

Macdonald had a pace-maker like device inserted in his chest on Friday and was released from hospital on Saturday.

A statement from the Southland Rugby Union says Macdonald will be staying in Auckland in the immediate future to be close to medical support.
