Panel rejects Phoenix's red card appeal

An independent match review panel has decided not to overturn the Wellington Phoenix footballer Ben Sigmund's red card he received in their match against Adelaide on Saturday night.

Sigmund was sent off in the second half of the game after he appeared to foul Adelaide's Argentinian import Jeronimo Neumann, yet it was clear in television replays there was little contact and Newmann appeared to throw himself to the ground several steps later.

The Phoenix appealed the decision, and on Monday night the review panel decided there was no obvious error by referee Jarred Gillet.

The panel also decided that Neumann could not be the subject of a post-match review for simulation, or diving, while Ben Sigmund's one-game suspension is still in place for him to miss the Phoenix's match with the Melbourne Victory this weekend.

The Phoenix captain Andrew Durante could also be sanctioned for calling Neumann a cheat after the midfielder's alleged dive resulted in Sigmund's sending-off.
