England lose first test in India

8:26 am on 20 November 2012

The Indian cricketers extinguished any English hope of survival on the final day to win the opening Test in Ahmedabad by 9 wickets.

Spinner Pragyan Ojha took 4 wickets in the England second innings, including Alistair Cook who made 176, and Matt Prior for 91.

England were bowled out for 406 before lunch on the last day and India knocked off their target off 77 with the loss of just one wicket.

The damage was done early on when the hosts declared at 521 for 8 in their first innings, and England could only compile 191 in reply.

Captain MS Dhoni singled out two players in particular for praise - Ojha, who took 9 wickets in the match, and Cheteshwar Pujara who scored a double century in the first innings.

England have lost 5 of their 6 Tests in Asia so far this year.

The second Test starts in Mumbai on Friday.
