The Wellington golfer Gareth Paddison is in a share of second place after his opening round of the Australian Open at the Lakes Club in Sydney.

Paddison carded an opening round four-under par 68, to sit two shots behind the clubhouse leader Australian John Senden.

He briefly held the outright lead with four birdies in five holes but then suffered two bogeys.

He's in a four way tie for second, along with Englishman Justin Rose.

Dunedin's Mahal Pearce is the next best New Zealander at two under, in a share of tenth place.
