Flamengo claim Zico has the goal scoring record not Messi

The Brazilian football club Flamengo claim their former player Zico holds the record for goal scoring in a calendar year, despite Barcelona's Lionel Messi being credited with the accolade.

Zico, who starred in the World Cup in 1978, 1982 and 1986 without lifting the trophy, scored 89 goals in the 1979 season, according to Flamengo.

The midfielder netted 81 goals for the Rio-based club, seven with Brazil and one in a friendly.

Barca's Messi was credited with the new record last week after going better than German legend Gerd Mueller's previous reported best of 85 goals in 1972.

Messi has taken his tally to 88 after scoring twice as holder Barcelona beat second-division Cordoba 2-nil in their King's Cup last-16 first leg tie.

However Zambia's Football Association say they'll also contest Messi's title.

They say legendary Zambian striker Godfrey Chitalu scored 107 goals in 1972, the same year Müller set his supposed record with Bayern Munich.
