Nix draw with Mariners

7:05 am on 23 December 2012

The Wellington Phoenix came back to draw 1-1 with the visiting top of the table Central Coast Mariners in their A-League football match in the capital on Saturday.

The top of the table Mariners scored just before half-time through Daniel McBreen to leave the Phoenix facing their third straight loss, but Dani Sanchez grabbed the equaliser for the home side with six minutes to play.

Despite a gorgeous day in Wellington just 5,961 fans showed up to watch the Phoenix host the top side.

The Phoenix remain just outside the playoff places in seventh, while the All White forward Marco Rojas scored again as his Melbourne Victory beat crosstown rivals Melbourne Heart 2-1.

Elsewhere, Newcastle reclaimed a top-six spot with a 2-1 win over the struggling Sydney FC at Hunter Stadium to leave the Sky Blues remain anchored to the bottom.
