Defending champion at Auckland Classic makes early exit

Defending champion Zheng Jie has been knocked out of the Auckland Classic women's tennis tournament in the first round.

The Chinese fourth seed has been defeated 7-5 6-1 by American Jamie Hampton.

Zheng follows former world number two Svetlana Kuznetsova in making an early exit from the singles.

On the opening day Kuznetsova lost in three sets to unseeded Dutch player Kiki Bertens.

Meanwhile New Zealand's Marina Erakovic and her British doubles partner Heather Watson won their first round match, defeating the New Zealand pairing of Paige Mary Hourigan and Claudia Williams in straight sets, 6-0 6-1.

Erakovic opens her singles campaign on New Year's Day against a Canadian qualfier, Stephanie Dubois.
