Watson through after Cirstea retires

The British number one Heather Watson has made the second round of the ASB tennis classic after her Romanian opponent Sorana Cirstea retired with illness.

The fifth seeded Cirstea withdrew after Watson had won the first set 6-3.

The 20-year-old from Guernsey says she had been worried about her recovery time, after last night's doubles win with New Zealand's Marina Erakovic, then having to play today's first match.

Heather Watson will be fresher than expected for her next match against Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, who upset the former world number two Svetlana Kuznetsova, yesterday.

On Centre Court, the sixth seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan beat the unseeded Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-3 6-2.

Elsewhere the eighth seed Mona Barthel of Germany beat Grace Min from the USA 6-1 6-3.
