The American National Football League side the San Francisco 49ers have given their players a break thanks to their first-round bye in the NFL playoffs, but the team has kept busy, signing Billy Cundiff to compete for the club's kicking job.

Cundiff, cut by the Washington Redskins in October , will compete with incumbent David Akers.

Niners coach Jim Harbaugh has given his players three days off before beginning preparations for one of three possible opponents in their January 12 playoff game in San Francisco - Green Bay, Seattle or Washington.
