Rain stops Dakar Rally

1:39 pm on 13 January 2013

Torrential rain brought chaos to the 8th stage of the Dakar Rally after rivers overflowed and tracks were blocked.

The stage was stopped and organisers are discussing their options.

At that time, 2011 champion Nasser al-Attiyah, who started the day in second place in the overall standings, was 13 seconds ahead of America's Robby Gordon with overall leader Stephane Peterhansel, the defending champion, three minutes behind.

The rally is being run in Argentina because of security concerns in Africa.
