Fast times in opening session on national track cycling champs

Sweltering heat has helped produced some fast times in the opening session of the national track cycling champs at Invercargill's velodrome.

Auckland's Ethan Mitchell won the men's 250m time trial title with a New Zealand record time while Otago's Katie Schofield broke her own New Zealand record to win the women's title.

Olympic medallist Aaron Gate of Auckland qualified fastest in the men's 4000m individual pursuit and will ride off against Christchurch's Michael Vink in tonight's final.

With defending champions Allison Shanks out through injury Hamilton's Jaime Nielsen was the fastest qualifier in the women's 3000m individual pursuit and will ride off in tonight's fianl against Auckland's Georgia Williams.
