What future for wrestling in New Zealand?

New Zealand Wrestling's national coach Mark Grayling says he has concerns about the immediate future of the sport.

Wrestling won't feature in the 2020 Olympic Games following a surprise recommendation by the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board to drop the sport.

A part of the ancient Games and contested since the first modern Olympics in 1896, wrestling will now join seven other candidate sports battling for one spot in a revamped programme.

New Zealand last had a wrestler at an Olympics in 2000, but they regularly attend the Commonwealth Games.

Grayling says his concern know is next year's Commonwealth Games as they're just in the process of selection and it leaves many questions unanswered about funding.

There are about 500 competitive wrestlers in New Zealand.
