The New Zealand men's sprint team has won a silver medal at the World Track Cycling Championships in Belarus.

Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins went into the gold medal ride against Germany as top qualifiers, and while they went faster in the second ride, the Germans turned in the best performance of the day to pip the New Zealanders by just under a tenth of a second.

The New Zealanders had been in front until the last few hundred metres.

France beat Australia for the bronze medal.

New Zealander Simon van Velthooven won a silver medal in the kilo time trial yesterday.
