Australia is 316 for 7 at stumps on day one of the first cricket Test against India in Chennai thanks largely to a century from captain Michael Clarke.

Clarke is unbeaten on 103 at the close of play, having revived Australia's innings with the assistance of debutant Moises Henriques who made 68 as the pair put on a 151-run partnership.

Entering the fray with Australia in trouble at 5-153, Moises Henriques could hardly have picked a tougher time to make his Test debut.

The 26-year-old allrounder said his legs felt like jelly as he walked out to begin the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

The Portugal-born right-hander says skipper Michael Clarke, was a great calming influence.

The first-gamer fell late in the day lbw to spinner Ravi Ashwin after missing a big swipe to the legside.

Ashwin took 6-88 to be the destroyer who rocked Australia early in their innings.
