Herbert should sever ties with Phoenix: Hay

The former All White Captain Danny Hay says he thinks it would be better for Ricki Herbert to sever all ties with the Wellington Phoenix.

Herbert resigned this morning as head coach after six years in the job, but has accepted a role as Technical Advisor to the Phoenix board.

Citing this season's poor results as part of the reason for his immediate departure, Herbert says he needs to spend more time in his other role as coach of the All Whites, who are trying to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Hay says Herbert couldn't respond to the board's call for the team to play a more attractive brand of football this season, so the club would be better off without him.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix assistant coach Chris Greenacre has taken over as head coach for the remainder of the season.

He says Herbert has created a legacy at the club where everyone is sad to see him go.
