The New Zealand junior men's hockey team has thrashed Papua New Guinea 15-0, however the New Zealand junior women were beaten 3-1 by Australia in their first games of their respective Junior World Cup Qualifiers on the Gold Coast.

The women are playing three tests against Australia, and the men play games against Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Australia with the top two qualifying for the 2013 Junior World Cups.

Samoa and Papua New Guinea withdrew from the women's draw, allowing the Black Sticks automatic qualification along with Australia.

Regardless, a tournament win for both New Zealand sides will result in an easier pool at the Junior World Cup.
