The Otago batsman Hamish Rutherford appears to have secured his test place after scoring 90 for the New Zealand XI in their tour match against England in Queenstown.

In his first first class match in a month, Rutherford batted for three and a half hours and faced 149 balls, hitting 14 boundries.

His opening partner Tom Latham made just 16, while the locals finished the second day on 224 for six in reply to England's first innings of 426.
