The former Black Caps international's total is also the first double century in the domestic one day competition.
How hit 27 fours and eight sixes in his 138-ball innings, as CD made 417 for six in their 50 overs - also a record.
His score surpasses the previous highest by Brendon McCullum who made 170 not out for Otago against Auckland five years ago.
The highest ever individual first class one day score was made by England batsman Ali Brown, who scored 268 for Surrey against Glammorgan in 2002.
ND hit a record of their own in reply with the all-time highest ninthwicket partnership of 95 runs between Cameron Fletcher and Graeme Aldridge but they were all out for 398 with seven balls remaining.
