Wayne Rooney's demotion to the substitutes' bench in Manchester United's Champions League loss to Real Madrid has triggered speculation his time at the club could be coming to an end.

The Times newspaper is reporting Manchester United's willing to sell Rooney in the off-season while the Daily Mail says the striker's facing a desperate fight to save his Old Trafford career.

Though only 27, his 195 goals for the club put him in fourth place in United's all-time scoring chart, trailing only Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and Jack Rowley.

The United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to harbour concerns about Rooney's fitness and attitude and he has shown a lack of sentiment with Roy Keane, David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam among the United stars shown the door at Old Trafford.
