Life ban for Greek player after Nazi salute

11:17 am on 18 March 2013

Greece under-21 international Giorgos Katidis has been given a life ban from playing for his country after using a Nazi salute during a match, the Greek football association EPO says.

The AEK Athens player made the gesture while celebrating the winning goal in a 2-1 victory six minutes from the end of the game against Veria.

In a statement the EPO says the player's gesture was "a deep insult to all victims of Nazi brutality".

The 20-year-old midfielder later apologised but says he was unaware of the significance of the gesture.

Katidis says he was trying to devote the goal to a team-mate sitting in the stands and was pointing to him and trying to get spectators to stand up.
