McCullum devastated by not getting the win

The New Zealand cricket captain Brendon McCullum was devastated after his side came so close to a series victory over England.

McCullum's under-rated team had come within one wicket of upsetting the world's second-ranked test team to claim the series 1-0 after the first two matches in Dunedin and Wellington ended in rain-affected draws.

New Zealand had England on the ropes when play began at Eden Park on the final day, but the tourists batted it out for the draw with the last two batsmen at the wicket.

McCullum says it's heartbreaking, they played some brilliant cricket throughout the series and dictated terms from day one and they gave it every chance to force the result.

He says they came up against a defiant English team, but he's an optimist and right up to the last ball he still felt they were going to win.

McCullum says he doesn't regret not enforcing the follow-on, having dismissed England 204 in their first innings after the Black Caps made 443 but wanted his bowlers to have a rest.

New Zealand's next outing is a tour to England in May.
