Crusaders kick to victory despite missing star power

8:35 am on 31 March 2013

The Crusaders have unexpectedly beaten the Stormers 19-14 in Cape Town, with gritty defence earning their third victory of the Super Rugby season.

Missing the likes of Dan Carter, Kieran Read and Israel Dagg, the depleted Crusaders came back with 13 unanswered points to lead 13-11 at half-time.

Both sides scored a try each, both in the first half.

First five eighth Tyler Bleyendaal kicked the only conversion for the Crusaders as well as slotting four penalties in a man of the match performance in the absence of Carter, who's just become a father back home in Christchurch.

The victory propels the Crusaders two points above the Hurricanes into second place in the local conference, five points behind the Chiefs but with a game in hand.

Elsewhere, the Chiefs beat the Blues 23-16, the Hurricanes won a high-scoring match 46-30 over the Southern Kings, the ACT Brumbies narrowly edged the Bulls and the Cheetahs beat the Melbourne Rebels.
