McIlroy may not have a choice over playing for UK or Ireland

The two-time major golf winner Rory McIlroy may not have to choose which team to represent at the 2016 Olympics with International Olympic Committee regulations possibly taking the decision out of his hands.

McIlroy could play for either Great Britain or Ireland at the Games, as being from Northern Ireland he's also eligible for the British team.

But McIlroy has previously said he might skip the Games so as not to cause offence to either side of the sectarian divide.

The chief executive of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew Peter Dawson, says it's unfair to place such pressure on the 23 year old.

He says with McIIroy having played for Ireland at amateur level and at World Cup level there may be a regulation within the Olympic rules which means he'd have to continue playing for Ireland.
