Former Blues assistant coach hopeful of Ireland appointment

The two-time European Cup-winning coach Joe Schmidt says he's hopeful he will be named the new Ireland rugby coach.

The former Blues assistant coach who guided Leinster to the 2011 and 2012 European Cups was one of four candidates interviewed for the job to replace Declan Kidney, who was sacked last month after a poor Six Nations.

Schmidt is tipped as the favourite for the job by the Irish media with an announcement on the the role expected later this week.
