The New Zealand opening batsman Hamish Rutherford is to join English county cricket side Essex after the two-test series against England, which got underway Thursday night in London.

Rutherford has been signed as a replacement for injured Australian batsman player Rob Quiney.

Rutherford isn't in the Black Caps squad for the subsequent one-day and Twenty20 series, or the ICC Champions Trophy.

He played his first test against England in Dunedin in March, scoring 171, the seventh-highest score by a batsman on debut.
