The new Canterbury Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle says she would not have been interested in a job in rugby league unless she felt the code had made significant strides in improving its culture.
Currently chief executive of New Zealand Netball, Castle will take up the role in July, the first female chief executive of an NRL club under the modern day structure.
Castle was appointed boss of the NRL club yesterday and says rugby league is capable of leading the way in changing community attitudes towards women but more needs to be done.
She says administrators have the opportunity to make a difference and change attitudes when they work with players upwards of 50 hours a week.
Castle says they can work with them to show what it is to respect women and to understand cultural diversity.
She says high-profile players with a lot of money are sometimes put in difficult situations and it's about making good decisions.
Castle comes from a rugby league background and has a strong connection to the Bulldogs.
