Clumsy All Blacks beat France

The All Blacks have opened their season with a win, beating France 23-13 at Eden Park.

In a clumsy, error strewn encounter, the French scored the first try before Aaron Smith and Sam Cane crossed the line for New Zealand to lead 17-10 at half time.

Line breaks by Ben smith and Ma'a Nonu were instrumental in setting up the All Blacks' tries.

First five Aaron Cruden kicked 13 points, but missed his first two penalty attempts.

Coach Steve Hansen says it was an ugly match that featured about 25 avaoidable errors from New Zealand.

He says a high error rate is normal at the start of a season when players are working on new things, and that their performance will be better next week.

In his first start, the All Blacks hooker, Dane Coles, admits he struggled to contain his emotions in the moments leading up to his first start and was teary-eyed during the national anthem.

The halfback, Aaron Smith, says the All Blacks need to work on their physicality next week as they were bullied by the French at the breakdown throughout the match.

The loosehead prop, Wyatt Crockett, was pleased to be part of a dominant All Blacks scrum after coming under fire for his technique throughout his career.

He says there was plenty of promise in the side's first effort of the season.
