Mickelson leads during 2nd round of US Open

The American Phil Mickelson is tied for the lead at one under par after completing his second round at the US Open in Philidelphia.

68 players have yet to finish their second rounds after bad light suspended play at the indomitable Merion golf club.

A similar number had to complete their first rounds this morning after day one was interrupted by rain.

After a first round 67, Mickelson was was leading at three under par, but the 42 year old dropped two shots in his 2nd round 72 that only featured one birdie.

His compatriot Billy Horschel carded a second round 67 to share the lead one stroke ahead of five players tied for third.

Englishmen Luke Donald (72), Justin Rose (69) and Ian Poulter (14 holes), American Steve Stricker (69) plus Taiwan's 21-year-old amateur Cheng-Tsung Pan (nine holes) all sit at even par in the uncompleted second round.

Rounds of 73 and 75 for Hamilton's Steve Alker have him at 8 under for the tournament right on the projected cut line.

The 2005 champion, Michael Campbell will resume his second round on the 13th hole tomorrow at 11 over par.

The world numbers one and two Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy shot 73 in the morning round but backed it up with matching 70s to be three over and well in contention, tied for 17th.

Their playing partner and world number three Adam Scott has slumped to 7 over.
