Lions beat Waratahs, but could lose Roberts

The Welsh centre Jamie Roberts is clinging to the hope his tour isn't over after suffering a suspected torn hamstring in the British and Irish Lions' record win over the New South Wales Waratahs.

Fielding their strongest team of the tour, the Lions outclassed the undermanned Waratahs 47-17 in front of a capacity crowd of 40,805 fans at Sydney's Allianz Stadium.

Fullback Leigh Halfpenny helped himself to a personal haul of 30 points from two tries, four conversions and four penalties in a flawless goalkicking display as the Lions kept their unbeaten record on tour intact.

But the sight of Roberts limping up the tunnel late in the match soured the five-tries-to-two victory.

Roberts had been expected to partner Irish superstar Brian O'Driscoll in the midfield for the first Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane.

But if scans confirm the worst, the Welsh hitman will likely be sent home with countryman Jonathan Davies in line to replace Roberts as O'Driscoll's centre partner after standing out against the Waratahs.

Meanwhile, the Saracens and England centre Brad Barritt has been called up to the Lions squad.
