Champ opts for Wellington over Lance Armstrong

The surprise winner of the recent Australian road cycling champs, Peter McDonald, has opted to compete in Wellington rather than take on seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong in Adelaide's Tour Down Under.

McDonald's win in Ballarat gave him automatic entry to the Adelaide event but he's kept to his commitment to ride in the Tour of Wellington, saying he enjoyed competing in it four years ago.

The Tour Down Under marks Armstrong's return to professional cycling three years after retiring, and at 37 he hopes to become the oldest winner of the Tour de France.
