Sweltering conditions at Melbourne force roof closure

8:11 pm on 28 January 2009

The Extreme Heat Policy has been invoked on a brutally hot day at the Australian Tennis Open after temperatures in Melbourne soared above 40 degrees.

The roof at Rod Laver Arena was closed at the end of the first set of American Serena Williams and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova women's quarter-final.

The policy also means there will be extended breaks between sets in all matches and no new matches will begin on the outside courts until the temperature drops.

Williams ended up winning the match 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 and she told SKY Sport she felt like she was having an 'out of body experience' before the roof was closed.
