The Boston Red Sox baseball club have reached agreement on a one-year contract extension with captain Jason Varitek.

Major League Baseball's website mlb.com says the $5 million deal also contains an option for 2010.

Varitek has been captain since December 2004.

He has been part of a team that has reached the postseason five times in the last six years, including the club's first two World Series titles since 1918.

Triple All-Star Varitek has played a total of 1,330 games and compiled a .263 average with 161 homers and 654 RBI.
