Tennis history beckons Roger Federer

Tennis history beckons world number two Roger Federer who takes on world number one Rafael Nadal in tonights mens singles final at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

A fourth title in six years at Melbourne Park would give Federer a 14th grand slam crown, drawing him level with American Pete Sampras as the most prolific men's major winners of all-time.

If Federer beats Nadal attention will turn to when he can overtake Sampras on the grand slam winners' list.

One certainty is that the men's decider will provide a better contest than the non-event which was Saturday's women's final.

Serena Williams deservedly reclaimed the world No.1 ranking after her 6-0 6-3 demolition of shellshocked Russian Dinara Safina.

The match lasted just 59 minutes - less than a fifth of the time it took Nadal to edge past fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in their epic men's semi.

That match lasted into the early hours of Saturday morning, meaning Nadal will have had 27 hours less than Federer to prepare for the final.

Federer denies it will give him much of an advantage - especially as it was the first time the Spaniard was taken beyond three sets in the tournament.
