American baseball has been thrown into disarray after its highest-paid player, Alex Rodriguez, admitted using performance-enhancing drugs.

The 33-year-old, known as A-Rod by fans, says he took steroids for several years - but he denies using them now.

Baseball's been hurt in recent years by a series of allegations involving drug use and corruption and the admission by Rodriguez - baseball's highest paid player, who's just one 10-year 510 million dollar contract with the New York Yankees - further tarnishes its image.

Rodriguez says he felt he needed to take steroids - although he has no idea what sort of cocktail he was taking.

His admission about steroid use in 2003 won't mean he faces any disciplinary action though as at the time steroid use was not illegal in the game.
