Injury bites Chiefs ahead of Sydney clash

7:56 am on 19 February 2009

The Chiefs have named their team to play the Waratahs in their Super 14 rugby match in Sydney on Friday night.

Both captain Mils Muliaina and loose forward Sione Lauaki are unavailable due to injury and haven't travelled to Sydney with the team.

Fullback Muliaina strained his back yesterday morning in an "innocuous" manner when standing up from his seat in a video session, while Lauaki's strained hamstring from last Saturday's game hasn't settled.

Chiefs loose forward Liam Messam will captain the team while Mike Delany will start at fullback in his Super 14 debut for the Chiefs. Delany played 10 games for the Highlanders last year. Sosene Anesi wasn't considered at fullback as he hasn't recovered completely from a hamstring strain.

Colin Bourke will play No.8.

In further injury worries centre Richard Kahui is currently suffering from a bruised hip which has sidelined him from training early this week, but it's hoped he'll play on Friday. The Chiefs' youngest player Jackson Willison travelled as back-up.
