South African police are considering charges of reckless driving against triple Paralympic sprint champion Oscar Pistorius, who suffered injuries to his face in a boating accident,.

Police say they're investigating the possibility Pistorius collided with a pier and not a floating object like a tree trunk.

Police divers found the boat he was driving at the bottom of the river in Vanderbijlpark near a pier which had been ripped from its posts.

The 22-year-old, known as the "Blade Runner" after the carbon fibre blades that have replaced his lower legs, has had surgery and is in intensive care.

His manager says doctors are confident he will make a full recovery.
