A-Rod to have surgery

7:07 am on 9 March 2009

The New York Yankees baseball slugger Alex Rodriguez will have surgery on his torn right hip labrum to enable him to play this season with further surgery planned next off-season.

Rodriguez is expected to be able to return to action in about two months.

The third baseman, baseball's highest paid player, will be operated on tomorrow by hip specialist Dr Marc Philippon in Vail, Colorado.

Rodriguez is also at the centre of a drugs controversey after admitting to taking steroids earlier in his career.
