Gallop says blanket alcohol ban wouldn't work

The National Rugby League boss David Gallop says a blanket alcohol ban on the league's players would be difficult to impose, and it would be individual clubs' responsibility.

Calls for a ban come in the wake of allegations of sexual assault made against Manly Sea Eagles star Brett Stewart at the weekend.

Gallop concedes the season start has been less than stellar, but he has ruled out a total ban on alcohol, saying it would be going too far.

He says the clubs are the employers, they've got an opportunity to set the sort of culture that they want in their own joint.

However, the NRL has issued Manly with a "please explain" over their alcohol-fuelled season launch and has not ruled out taking action against the club.
