Darwin mooted as alternate host for Champions Trophy

Darwin has declared its interest in hosting this year's Champions Trophy cricket tournament.

The chief executives of the International Cricket Council's member nations will today discuss whether Sri Lanka is the right venue to host the one-day competition.

The ICC decided earlier this year to switch the tournament from Pakistan to Sri Lanka because of security concerns, which were enhanced by last week's ambush on the Sri Lankan side in Lahore.

But the ICC is now concerned the Sri Lankan wet season could ruin this year's tournament and is prepared to consider other venues should the island nation be deemed an unsuitable host.

Australia has never hosted the Champions Trophy, but could do so through its northern-most capital city, which has a different weather pattern from the rest of the major cities.
